Ok, o primeiro passo havia sido dado. Eu precisava organizar o resto.

Ok, the first step had been taken. I needed to arrange the rest. I invited my brother-in-law, who is the owner of the only music school in our town (Canela, RS), to go with me. I thought it would be a nice experience for him too and as he once lived in São Paulo, things would be easier. So, I started checking hotel prices, airline tickets, distance between places and how much I would spend on transport each day. At first, just my cousin knew about it. She is my best friend since always and I wanted it to be a surprise for everybody else.

Next thing I had to do was prepare the questions for the interview. I had that little hope that I could interview both artists, so I wrote the questions in different colored papers that they would have to draw from a bag. Antonio’s colors were blue and yellow and Ed’s colors were green and orange. The questions for both of them were in a pink paper. Checking other interviews on the web, I found out that musicians ALWAYS answer the same questions. Well, I do think it is important to know the artist’s influences and the perspectives for the new album. But once this information is already available, the media should find something different to ask about. Other thing I think is terrible is to keep asking too personal things that is obvious the artist would not feel comfortable answering.

So I prepared questions that would show a little bit more of the artist as a person, as someone who lives in the real world like everybody else. To know about the artist’s personality and points of view on different aspects of life, makes the fans relate to their idol. This is a good thing, because it breaks a little bit that notion of barrier that keeps fans here and the artists over there. This way, both parts feel like they belong to something bigger. I believe that having this connection is very comforting for everybody.

Other thing that I did was base some questions on the lyrics of the songs. Everything that is inside their minds and hearts is what is written in their songs. Full of analogies, the songs can express many things but if you pay close attention, you will see the real feeling behind them. Of course, there are a lot of songs around the world that were made to sell; they stick into our minds and never let go. But somebody that comes to the stage with just a guitar, exposes even more the fragility of a heart. This is what these guys do. And it is really honorable.

I was not sure if the interviews would actually happen, but I kept the questions in my pocket during all my staying in São Paulo. Besides that, I put a handful of our famous Brazilian Coffee Candies in my backpack to give them as a gift (but I totally forgot to deliver it, sadly) and also carried with me my pack of Uno Cards, in case we had time to play. By reading this, you can see that I kept hopeful until the last minute, right? All this might sound silly: me, on the verge of being 25 years old, carrying colored paper, a notebook with Mike Wazowski from Monsters University on the cover, Coffee Candies and the Uno Cards inside of a Wonder Woman backpack. I have to admit, I did feel silly sometimes. But in a while you will see why I was wrong for feeling this way.

The blog was supposed to cover the concert on Wednesday and we arrived in São Paulo on Monday, so we had plenty of free time. We decided to go to the venue on the first day of concerts to interview the fans, take some pictures of them, record videos and other stuff like that. While recording my conversation with those teenagers outside the venue, I got really moved by the stories they were telling me. Most of them could not buy the tickets because they only knew about it after it was already sold out. Others could not afford it, but were happy to stay there, waiting to see their idol jumping from a big black van and waving to them for those 5 seconds on his way towards the back door. These kids were there to show their support.

Suddenly, I saw Antonio leaving the building to talk to the fans waiting on the line. I followed him and introduced myself as the girl who had sent him emails previously. For a millisecond, I thought he would totally ignore me. I think it is the feeling that English are more reserved people and we Brazilians are shockingly warm and this would cause an uncomfortable situation. BUT NO! He was really courteous and seemed very friendly, in spite of my approach (running after him, shouting his name). We scheduled the interview for the following evening, at 6:15 pm. I was so happy and so terrified at the same time. I HAD to be punctual for this. Everybody knows that punctuality is not one of my strengths, so I set up my alarm to wake up at 5:30 am.
