Although I knew I could only attend the concert on Wednesday, I HAD to be there on Tuesday too. I needed to feel the energy, the great vibrations coming from the fans there waiting to, as some would say, enjoy the best day of their lives so far. So I put my cameras in my backpack and an extra memory card, just in case. Grabbed my cell phone, already charged, and my brother-in-law’s voice recorder. I took one last look in the mirror and, at that moment, I felt everything would be okay. Somehow.

The sun had just set when we arrived at Barra Funda Station. As we left the platform, I could see the venue and the traffic jam due to the huge amount of people taking over the streets around. I heard people screaming and at that exact moment I realized, for the first time, how much I wanted to be there. To see everything, to feel everything.

A fila era tremendamente comprida. Pessoas vendendo camisetas. Pessoas vestindo elas.

The line was tremendously long. People selling T-shirts. People wearing them. That lime green color was making the night brighter, as if a handful of fireflies had just been released from a pickle jar where they were being kept. And I was there, reminiscing the old times at my uncle’s ranch.

I saw the vehicle entrance right next to the building and I just turned right, nobody stopped me. I found weird when a fan got too close, pretending she was with me. When I asked her, she told me it would be the only way she could go to the back door because the guards were blocking everyone’s passage, except for the cars. Hello again, Mrs. Luck! I didn’t know I had brought you in my backpack too!

Time to check the place out. I walked to the other side of the parking lot, talked to some girls at the line and they were extremely happy. That made me feel the same way. Then, I went back to the back door and started talking to the fans that were waiting to see Ed arriving. I turned on the voice recorder and the questions started slipping from my mouth. Well, I found out very interesting things. You will see that these pictures might appear to be melting people, by the way. My camera was set with slow shutter and I didn’t even noticed. So, it’s not a special effect, it really was my mistake!

Voltando para a entrevista: as músicas favoritas delas são “One Night”, do álbum Loose Change, “Give Me Love”, do álbum Plus e “Thinking Out Loud” do Multiply.

I had just started the first interview when the big black van appeared. The screaming started and I had to pause everything. Ed got out from the car and waved to the people waiting there. It was so fast that I couldn’t even take a picture. I just saw his hair and his hand. From the first two girls I interviewed, which the names are inaudible (so, girls, if you are reading this, please send me your names!), I heard that the first time they had contact with Ed Sheeran music was through friends and the series The Vampire Diaries. At that moment, I remembered all the times I stood in front of TV at home, writing parts of lyrics I could understand from any TV show soundtrack. I kept everything written on a pad so that the day I had internet at home, I could download the songs. Waiting for the credits when I watched movies was something that made me crazy very often. I had to be very attentive and with a good eye. Going back to the interview: their favorite songs are “One Night” from the album Loose Change, “Give Me Love” from the album Plus and “Thinking Out Loud” from Multiply.

entrevista1

The second interview was with a big group of girls that were waiting there to see Ed Sheeran since 1 pm. Their names were Mariana, Luanna, Aline, Carol, Bruna, Tainise and Rosana. Some of them are fans since 2011! One of the reasons they started listening to Ed songs was because he wrote the song “Little Things” for the boy band One Direction. Some of the girls are Directioners (how the fans of the band One Direction are called), and they slept for 56 days in the waiting line for their concert. So between Ed and One Direction, they were unable to define whom they liked more. For them, my question was like asking a mom which son she prefers. But they, of course, have their favorite songs. The highest voted for Ed Sheeran’s best songs were “Give Me Love” and “Don’t”. As this two songs talk about relationships in totally different perspectives and feelings, I asked them why they liked so much the song “Don’t” if it’s about something very bad (betrayal). They told me that they could relate to it, because these things are things everybody goes through at a certain point of their lives. And Ed expressed his feelings in a so genuine way that it shows he can express all the things somebody would like to say but can’t put it into words.

entrevista2

We also met a girl who did some stunts to see her favorite artists. Erica, from Sao Paulo, even presented a voucher of her driving school pretending it to be the Meet and Greet voucher on a Fifth Harmony concert. When they realized she was lying, she was already inside the venue. Of course, as people can never get away with doing something wrong, she could not meet the group. So don’t try doing this at home, folks! She also earned the chance to go to concerts by participating in promos offered by radio stations and TV channels. It’s a good way, people! I have already won some things by doing this, so it is worth to put your head to think a little bit more in order to create the most creative answer. Erica’s tip: always try to mix some lyrics of the artist with your answer.

entrevista3

Natália and Karen were two fans that had bought the Premium Ticket for the concert, but were still outside, at the back door, hoping to see Ed. They were not interested to try to stay on the front row because people keep pushing the others in these circumstances, so they preferred to enjoy the concert without any injuries! Karen also works for a website called Febre Teen and, because of that, she could be face to face with their favorite artists: she photographed the girls from Fifth Harmony during their concert here in Brazil. So cool, isn’t it?

entrevista4

Rute, Elza and Gustavo had a really interesting story to tell me. I mean, a detective story. After having participated in all kinds of promos to win tickets to the concert, they were with nearly empty hands there at the venue. They only had a bag with DVDs, CDs, magazines and the hope he would sign the items. Their last hope was to see Ed at the hotel he would be staying at. They told me that everybody thought he would stay at Renaissance Hotel. They were planning to go there as soon as the sun rose. Suddenly, a fan posted a picture with Ed on Facebook in front of the hotel. They could see a little part of the façade of the hotel and then they figured out that it wasn’t the hotel they were thinking Ed would be at. That was Unique Hotel! They got to the metro station around 4:40 am and waited in front of the hotel until 10 am! Around that time, other girls were approaching the place and they started to feel afraid things wouldn’t go as planned. Someone from the media had leaked the information about the hotel and when they less expected, the place was crowded. They only felt some relief when they heard that Ed would come outside so the fans could take pictures of him. It was 4 pm. They waited until 5:30 pm and then they saw Ed leaving the hotel inside the van. He didn’t come outside to please the fans. They felt really disappointed.

entrevista5

Afinal, ele tinha três shows pra fazer aqui no Brasil.

I told them that maybe Ed was worried about his own physical integrity, because we all know how Brazilian fans are. I have already said that, we are a very welcoming people. The fans want to hug, to touch, to talk to their idols. They want to show how much they care and this may frighten someone that comes from another culture. After all, he had three concerts ahead here in Brazil. It wouldn’t be nice if people wanted to get something from him to reminisce afterwards. Some people try to get a piece of clothing, a lock of hair, a finger… I’m kidding about the finger! But if the approach is as intense as our blood running through our veins, anyone should be cautious. Anyway, I truly understand how bad these fans felt. Because after a long waiting like this, any little thing is a blessing coming from above. When nothing happens, well…

Darah and Bruna like not just the lyrics, but also the melodies and Ed Sheeran’s voice. They said they feel very calm when listening to his songs. Alongside with One Direction, Ed is on their list of favorite artists. And thanks to the boy band, the girls first heard about Ed. Darah went to One Direction concert and she said it was amazing! But for Ed concert, the girls didn’t have any tickets. They said that when they heard about it, the tickets were all sold out. They think it could have been better publicized in all medias, so when the selling started, they haven’t had enough time to save money to buy it.

entrevista6

I had such a great time interviewing everybody! But I felt it was time to go to the front door and try to talk to other people there. Then I met Caroline, Rafael and João. They didn’t have any tickets in hands, but they were having so much fun that it was contagious! They became friends on that same day. They told me something very special: artists have the power to unite people. And although some people don’t understand this thing of being fan, sometimes they feel more comfortable talking about their issues to another fan, rather than to a friend from school. Because, after all, they really feel like a big family when what they have in common with the others is the respect and admiration for somebody else’s work. They are also pretty sure that music has helped them go through some obstacles in life, once they know their idols had been through the same struggles. When they feel bad, they find comfort in Ed’s songs. They believe that the songs express what the artist really is, differently from the information provided by the media.

entrevista7

The interview with Rafaela, Aline and Larissa was my last one of the night. They first heard Ed Sheeran’s voice when he performed the song “Give Me Love” with Demi Lovato, who is their favorite artist. One of the girls had won a ticket for the premium area from someone from Ed’s crew, but she was trying to get tickets for the other two girls. They were running out of time in that moment, because the show was just about to start. They also told me that if they were artists, they would like to help people the same way they’ve been helped. They mentioned the song “Believe In Me” by Demi Lovato to express their feelings about helping people through music.

entrevista8

All of the fans interviewed were unanimous in saying that a song that is made with the the heart touches much more the audience than that “formula” used to make hits that get stuck in our heads for a long time. And, most of all, they want reciprocity from the artists. When the fans show their love, they want to receive the same vibration back.

Do you see the responsibility that an artist carries? In spite of being an occupation as important as any other, the artists have a special mission. Their job is to touch hearts and change lives. Is to bring to the surface the best thing you keep inside of yourself. And your job is to spread it around. When everybody helps everybody, a huge difference can be made. Do you want to see an example? Today I first saw the video made specially for the Jamie Oliver’s project to change children’s nutrition habits in schools. Around 42 million children under the age five across the world face problems with weight, either being overweight or obese. This problem can lead to a whole generation dying even before their parents, which is extremely sad and disturbing.

In order to have people signing the petition, Jamie invited great artists to spread the word with him. Among them are Ed Sheeran, Paul McCartney, Hugh Jackman, Jamie Cullum, Alesha Dixon and others. A song with an important message was made to aware people about the importance of getting involved and signing. Do you see it? One more time the music is changing things for better. Is improving the lives of the children all around the world. So what are you waiting for? Be part of it and let’s build a better future for our little ones.
