“You are my fire.

Before we go on: At this point, you might be wondering why on Earth I decided to write the texts in Portuguese and English. Well, I have never had the guts to do so. Until now. What happened was that, after the interview, Antonio asked me to send him the link to read it. I must confess that I instantly froze. I always though my English was crap. Why? Because I usually say that I learned what I know from the Backstreet Boys, once I found my third grade English test, in which we had to write two simple sentences. Guess what I wrote? “You are my fire. The one desire” from one of their songs that I loved. I was nine years old and I used to like this boy band so much that I started learning English without even know it. But the fact is that I couldn’t afford a course, so I did my own way. Guys, you will probably see a lot of mistakes, but anyway… Let’s give it a try. Maybe this way we can reach more people outside Brazil and Portugal. So thank you, Antonio, for taking me out of my comfort zone.

—————–

Sim!

Yep! It was his message. He was telling me that I needed to go to the door 18 and tell the security guards that I was there to meet him and that he had our passes. And he even asked if I was there. REALLY?? You bet. Could you ever imagine an artist this big like him being so nice to somebody he did not even know? That is the point, everybody. What I’m trying to say here goes beyond the fact that he is an artist and I write for a small website. This is about respect. And, in advance, I say: he is one of the nicest people I have ever had a conversation with. Especially because of most my questions had nothing to do with what a singer-songwriter expects to be asked about.

Então nós entramos no camarim do Antonio e eu me senti muito bem estando ali. Exatamente! No sofá!

I immediately answered his message saying that I was there but he had not seen me and that those security guards were tough. I asked him if he could get us outside. In less than a minute he was there with two orange stickers, that were our passes. As we entered the backstage, the artists’ staff were really kind, saying hi and smiling. Then we got to Antonio’s dressing room and I felt really good being there. The walls were white and there was a huge flower vase, a brown sofa and a giant mirror. As I usually feel at home everywhere I go, I put my jacket and my backpack on a chair and my cell phone on the table. Then Antonio said that he would probably sit on that chair. My cheeks went from red to purple at that moment. I said I was sorry and put my backpack next to me. But wait… if he was going to use the chair, where would we sit? Exactly! On the couch! He preferred to stay in a less comfortably way to let us be comfortable.

All the questions (the colored cards, remember?), were in a bag and Antonio was holding it all the time. He was kind of shuffling them and decided to start by the pink cards. The first question he picked up from the bag was something that everyone wonders when it comes to a public person. The question was “What is the best and the worst side of being a well known person?”. Without hesitating, he humbly answered the question saying that this was something new for him because until recently he wasn’t very well known but now, apparently, he is. And then he said that the best part is having people smiling at you and being nice to you all the time, because, in England, people kind of ignores the others. And now he receives bottles of wine! The worst side is that sometimes things get a little bit crazy and people start being nice and taking pictures with him without even knowing him, and it is pretty obvious when it happens because everybody notices it. And other thing is when he wants to live his own life and do his own things and he can’t.

The second question was “Is there anything you’ve always wanted to do but have never done? Why?” and it made him think a little bit, because it seemed to be more than one thing. And it was! He said that it would be lots of stuff, like flying a plane, diving (scuba diving, to be more specific) and other activities like that. Once it was to go on a world tour, but he was doing it at that moment. And for the future it would be getting together with a big band, with horns and everything, and going on tour with this band.

Without choosing, he picked up another question and read: “Are you afraid to die?”. He did not need a millisecond to answer effusively “OF COURSE!! We are naturally evolved to be afraid of dying. I just hope I die in a cool way.” He was saying that would be nice to see a conversation like “Do you remember how Antonio died?”, “Yeah! That was pretty cool!!” and we laughed a lot. With the luck that he has to only pick up the crazy questions, the one that followed was about something that we don’t like to remember. It was: “Share an embarrassing moment in your life or career.”. And with the luck he has to always have an answer for that kind of question, he told us what had happened to him that same afternoon: “I was leaving the hotel, and I had all my guitars and everything with me, walking towards the van to take us here, and there were loads of fans outside the hotel…”. Guess what happened? He tripped in front of everybody. When I asked him if anyone had helped him, he told us that he was a little bit far and that he hadn’t fallen over. That was close! He mentioned that when everybody recognizes you, any time that something embarrassing happens, people notices, takes pictures and that kind of thing.

Well, at least there are some questions that we all like to answer and we all like to think about. Like this one: “If your life could have a song as the soundtrack of it, this song would be…”. He told us that for him, it changes every week, but right now it would be a song called “Perth” by Bon Iver. Not because of the lyrics, but because he thinks the song itself  is really beautiful. Ani DiFranco is another singer-songwriter that Antonio likes a lot and as he is listening to her work all the time, it could be considered the soundtrack of his life as well. Going back to the weird questions: “What smell reminds you of home? And what sound?”. This one made him laugh and he said: “In London, it doesn’t smell so good! But I do love the smell of freshly cut grass. In spring, in East London where I live, that’s a really comforting smell.” Antonio also mentioned that in his house, where he lives now, there is a huge garden. The sound that reminds him of home: he travels a lot, either touring or just on vacation. When he gets back to London, there is a constant noise. Not like a noisy city like New York, but there is this constant buzz in London that he likes.

Ele riu.

Now, the hardest question from all: “If you could ask someone a question and get a completely honest answer, what would you ask?”. He said that he honestly didn’t know on that one. “I think I’m afraid of really really honest answers. Sometimes, a little bit of… not lying, but kind of being selective with the truth is really useful.” Otherwise, if we said everything we think about people, we wouldn’t get along with anybody – he completed. When he was asked about the funniest place he had ever fallen asleep, Antonio told us that before coming to South America, he was having some drinks with a friend. So he took the bus home after this, fell asleep and only woke up at the end of the line, about forty minutes later. Notice that the ride back home would only take 2 minutes. And as he fell asleep on the bus back and woke up again at the end of the line, it took him two and a half hours to get home. He said it was pretty embarrassing. To make him feel better, I told him about the time I fell asleep on a bus, but I was standing on my own two feet. And that I was in the way, next to the door, blocking the exit. True story. He laughed.

“When in your life have you had a ‘now or never’ moment?”. Antonio thinks it might have been in getting on this tour. He knew Ed was doing this tour and he thought it would be cool to play here. So he texted Ed saying ‘Hey, who’s going to open for you in South America?’ and Ed answered ‘Do you wanna do it?’ and it happened! Before that, he kept thinking ‘I shouldn’t ask, I shouldn’t ask.’. And then he said that sometimes you just have to think ‘Screw it, I’m gonna do it. Whatever.’ and just jump. When he read the question “If you could be friends with anyone in the world, dead or alive, real or fictional character, who would this person be?”, he thought for a moment and you won’t believe his answer. He said he would be friends with Pablo Neruda! At that very moment, it reminded me from a very sad but very sweet movie I watched in school around ten years ago called ‘Il Postino: The Postman”, which is about a postman that befriends Pablo Neruda while in exile and gets influenced by him. He said that he preferred to be friends with someone like Benjamin Franklin than with a celebrity, for example.

“If you could have a mutant/super hero ability, what would this be?”. Antonio said he wouldn’t like to live forever but he wanted to have the ability to heal. Whenever he got hurt or lost an arm or something, he would be able to recover easily. But he would also age and eventually die one day. But not because of a hurt. “How do you feel about the relationship with your family?” That’s a very personal question, but he opened his heart to us and revealed that his family is crazy. Antonio loves his family. He said they are brilliant and really supportive but sometimes they drive him wild. Like everyone’s family, isn’t it? When he said that it probably means that he is crazy too and I mentioned the DNA thing, he agreed and we laughed.

When Antonio started choosing the questions to answer, I figured out that it had been too many of them and then I decided to ask some things about his music based on his lyrics. The first one was: “But the train won’t wait forever, darling, it’s never or tonight (Never or Tonight). Do you have this urge to live?”. He answered that this is what this song is about, actually. He said the song was like saying “Look back here, I really like you. We can do this together, let’s make things happen.”. He said he doesn’t want to wait for anybody. And this thing “oh, I don’t know, I’m not sure” is not for him. About the part “Yeah, I made a mistake, but I wanna set things straight” from the song ‘Hey, It’s Okay’, which is about asking for forgiveness, I asked if these things were just in his lyrics or if he does what he writes. He said that his songs are about true stuff that has happened to him. The song ‘Hey, It’s Okay’, he wrote because he made a stupid joke to a friend and she didn’t take it very well. So he wrote the song to say that it was his fault and he was really sorry about that. And as there are not many songs to say sorry, he thought it would be a good idea. Then I asked: “Do you think it is easier to say you’re sorry or to forgive?”. Antonio said it is easier to say your sorry but forgiving takes a little bit more from us. It depends on what’s happened. Between forgiving and forgetting, he said that forgetting is interesting because we can’t really erase things but we can think ‘well, it happened, but I can totally live with that’.

Finally, I asked the last question: “My friends believe I’ll leave a trail of broken hearts along the freeway (The City of Austin, Texas). People think that this artist thing is all glamour, right?”. He laughed and said “Yes! What I discovered on this tour is that you go from being very recognized to being nobody like that (and snapped his fingers) like in the day-to-day. Here in this venue, somebody outside is like ‘Antonio! Antonio!’, and here (inside) I have this pass and without this pass I’m nobody. But also, we get up on that stage, drink, you get to go to nice restaurants. And then you get on a plane for seventeen hours, you have no sleep. Then you have to go straight to the venue and work. And then you are exhausted but somebody wants to go out, you say ‘Okay, let’s go out’. And then you have to pack, get on a bus and go to the airport again. It is a long journey, but it really is worth it in the end”. If he imagines himself doing exactly this ten years from now? I asked that too! He said he hopes so. He wants to be doing his own world tour. And about eventually settling down, he said he wants to have a nice house somewhere and spend half of the year there and the other half doing what he does. He definitely doesn’t see himself retiring.

You might be wondering why I didn’t interview Ed. I really tried. God knows how hard I tried. I even said: “Dear God, if you let me interview Ed, I will quit playing Candy Crush forever. I will even delete the app with all my progress of 376 levels concluded.” We couldn’t reach an agreement, though.

Did we learn something from this? Of course we did! We learned that we should always be nice to one another. Don’t make people feel like they are not worth it, because they may believe in it. Nobody is better than anybody. You might be really good at playing piano but your neighbor is not. But he knows everything about birds and plants.

We are different from one another. I could never be a doctor because I can stand seeing blood. But I was brought to life by a doctor. Each and every work is important. We are always teaching something or learning something from people around us. So don’t waste your life competing and trying to be better than the others. There is only one people you should beat every single day. This person is you. Our life really is a wheel of fortune: one day we are up, one day we are down. But remember that nobody wins or loses forever. Find the things you are good at and work on it.

Especificamente a cena do vídeo abaixo. Eu amo ver e fazer as pessoas rirem.

I still have not found what I am supposed to be or do in this world. I have already tried a little bit of a bunch of things and I am still looking for something I could not see yet. But we all know, deep inside, what makes our sparkle become a bonfire. I figured it out watching the movie Singin’ In The  Rain (1952). Specifically the scene of the video below. No wonder that my idols of all time are Chaplin, The Marx Brothers, Roberto Gomez Bolaños and Rowan Atkinson. I love to see and make people laugh. Even if it takes me tumbling and falling at a supermarket full of people or making funny faces on 99% of the pictures I am in.

I used to say: “I don’t like living here in this town”. But where else on Earth you can find a town with cookies, chocolate (a lot of), wine, cachaça and beer factories? Not much for the beverages, but for COOKIES AND CHOCOLATE! Not enough? Well, we have more people than vehicles on the streets and way more trees than people. We can breathe fresh air and listen to the birds singing when we are waking up. Then I learned the most valuable lesson I could ever be taught: instead of despising the things you do not like, try to value the good things you have around you.

Because of that, I decided to tattoo the word “Gratitude” on my wrist. For every time I stretch out my hand to receive something, it will remind me to be thankful for it. It is also because of the Beastie Boys song, but this is another department.

Fico bem feliz que tu gostou! Vou me esforçar pra continuar escrevendo com frequência.
